The basic reason for why Stu Ungar changed from gin to poker was that Stu was a little too skilled at it. So skilled was he, that no player could equal him. Even the commonly called professionals who were meant to be the greatest at gin were beat when they played with Stu Ungar. One such gin rummy masters was Harry Stein, nicknamed, "Yonkie". Mr. Stein suffered such a humiliating defeat at the hands of Stu Ungar that he apparently quit participating in it professionally and never showed up at a gin tournament.

Certainly, with a notoriety like that it was not long before gamblers became afraid of competing against stu. He couldn't find any matches and in his desperation he started doing something no one had performed prior. He began offering starting handicaps to likely opponents with the hope that they may play with him if they thought they held an edge. He at will started from a disadvantageous position and one story has it that stu even competed against a regular absconder. During the contest, he received advice that the cheater was at it one more time but stu guaranteed that he deduced of the fraudulent activity and he would still actually win, which of course, he did.

The same problem followed Stu Ungar into Las Vegas. He won so frequently that the casinos started asking him not to play in their rooms anymore. The reason for it was that other poker room visitors would not sit at the poker table if he were seated.

Stu Ungar is recollected more for his abilities in texas hold'em poker but he always maintained that he was a whole lot more accomplished at gin rummy.

He beat Doyle Brunson in the WSOP in Nineteen Eighty to become the youngest world champion. Because of his looks that made him appear far younger than he was, he got the nickname, "The Kid".
